Malta is a diver’s paradise, offering a rich tapestry of underwater wonders — from natural reefs and caves to fascinating shipwrecks. Among the most iconic dive sites on the island is the MV Rozi Wreck, located off the coast of Cirkewwain northern Malta. A sunken tugboat turned artificial reef, the Rozi offers an unforgettable glimpse into Malta’s maritime history and underwater ecosystem.
While you can’t reach the wreck by standard tour boat or snorkel trip, knowing about it — and being nearby — adds to the thrill of exploring Malta’s northern coast. That’s where Bluewaves Watersports comes in. Based in Marfa Bay, just minutes from Cirkewwa, Bluewaves offers an exciting range of watersports and boat rentals, giving you front-row access to the island’s stunning seascapes and diving hotspots.
The Story Behind the Rozi Wreck
The MV Rozi started her life above water. Built in 1958 by Charles Hill & Sons Ltd in Bristol, the tugboat was originally named Rossmore. She spent decades assisting large vessels in harbors across the UK before eventually being purchased by Tug Malta in 1981, where she was renamed Rozi and began operations in Malta’s Grand Harbour.
After years of faithful service, the Rozi was retired from active duty. But instead of being scrapped, she was intentionally sunk in 1992 off the coast of Cirkewwa, next to the P29 Wreck. The plan was to use her as a feature for submarine tours — which ran for a few years before ceasing. Now, the wreck lies quietly beneath the surface, transformed into a thriving artificial reef that is visited daily by divers from around the world.
Diving the Rozi Wreck
Today, the MV Rozi lies upright on a sandy seabed at depths ranging from 20 to 36 meters. She remains largely intact, apart from the removal of her engine and propeller prior to sinking. Divers exploring the site will find themselves surrounded by an abundance of marine life — including shoals of sea bream, parrotfish, cardinalfish, scorpionfish, and the occasional octopus or moray eel.
The wreck’s condition makes it an ideal dive for advanced open water divers. Because of its depth and the occasional strong currents, beginner divers typically aren’t permitted to explore it directly. However, those with the necessary certification and experience will find it an incredibly rewarding experience, especially with visibility often exceeding 30 meters during the summer months.
Access to the wreck is typically done via a short swim from the shore at Cirkewwa, often along the edge of a reef wall that leads divers directly to the site.
