Aħrax is one of Malta’s most natural and untouched walking areas. It offers a mix of pine woodland, rocky coastline, garigue, sea cliffs, and scattered caves. Paths are mostly informal, giving it a wild, exploratory feel.
Highlights:
- Coastal cliffs with views toward Comino
- Pine forest and open rocky plateaus
- Small caves and hidden coves
- Quiet and peaceful compared to other walking spots
2. Coral Lagoon Area
A short walk in northern Aħrax leads to the dramatic Coral Lagoon, a natural sinkhole overlooking the sea.
The trek can be made longer by adding the surrounding coastline, which features rugged limestone formations and panoramic views.

3. Armier → Aħrax → Paradise Bay Loop
This is a beautiful coastal circuit that links several northern beaches and inlets.
You can walk from Armier Bay, through the Aħrax woodland and cliffs, past the Coral Lagoon, and continue toward Paradise Bay.
Expect:

- Limestone cliffs
- Clear sea views
- Some uneven or rocky ground

4. Marfa Ridge & Red Tower Area
Just south of Aħrax, the Marfa Ridge offers easy to moderate walking with excellent views over Mellieħa Bay.
The area near St. Agatha’s (Red) Tower provides wide open ridge walks with plenty of breeze and scenery.
5. Mistra Bay & Selmun
A quieter and more secluded walk sits on the eastern side of Mellieħa, leading from Mistra Bay up toward Selmun Palace and the surrounding valleys.
You’ll find:
- Shallow valleys
- Rugged hillsides
- Small sandy coves
- A peaceful countryside atmosphere
6. Imġiebaħ Bay Walk
One of the most beautiful off‑the‑beaten‑path options.
A trek down into Imġiebaħ takes you through valleys and rocky tracks until you reach a remote, undeveloped beach.

7. Ras il‑Qammieħ & Western Cliffs
For something more challenging, the western side of the Mellieħa Peninsula has steep and uneven cliff paths with some scrambling sections.
This area offers:
- High viewpoints
- Dramatic cliff edges
- A tougher walking experience
8. Long Coastal Walks
If you enjoy full‑day trekking, you can link several of the above places into a long coastal hike from the northern tip of Malta down toward Mellieħa, Selmun, or even further south.
Tips for Walking in Aħrax
- Shade is limited, bring plenty of water.
- Wear sturdy shoes; paths can be rocky and uneven.
- Early morning or late afternoon offer the best light and cooler temperatures.
- Mobile signal can be spotty in some areas.
- Ideal walking season: October–May (cooler months).
