📍 Għar ta’ Karolina (Carolina Cave), Xlendi, Gozo
What it is: A natural limestone sea cave on the northern shore of Xlendi Bay. It’s part of a rugged coastal area with striking rock formations and coastal scenery.
Name origin: Named after Caroline “Karolina” Cauchi, a Gozitan woman who once owned the site; the cave and surrounding paths were historically used as a private bathing and swim spot by the Augustinian sisters whom she hosted here.
Access: The cave can be reached from the Xlendi cliff path above the bay by following a trail with steps leading down to the water’s edge — it’s a lovely spot for exploring, swimming, or enjoying views over the bay.
Experience: It’s informal and free to visit (no official ticketing); the terrain can be rocky, so wear sturdy shoes and be cautious if accessing sea level.
Xlendi Bay, where the cave is found, is a picturesque fishing village and resort on the south-west coast of Gozo. The area features high cliffs, sea caves, and pleasant waterfront views, perfect for walking, swimming, and cliffside picnics.
