Blue Hole in Gozo

A Natural Wonder Beneath the Surface

Gozo, the quieter and more rugged sister island of Malta, is home to some of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the Mediterranean. Among its many treasures, one stands out not just for its beauty, but for the magical experience it offers both above and below the waterline — the legendary Blue Hole.

Nestled on the western coastline of Gozo near Dwejra, the Blue Hole is a must-see for divers, snorkelers, nature lovers, and curious adventurers. It’s not only one of the most popular dive sites in Malta, but it’s also one of the most iconic geological formations in Europe.

What is the Blue Hole?

The Blue Hole is a stunning vertical underwater chimney — a natural limestone formation carved over thousands of years by the relentless action of wind and sea. At the surface, it appears as a deep, circular pool, about 10 meters wide and surrounded by rugged rock cliffs. But once you go beneath, it opens into a massive underwater world.

The hole descends to about 15 meters and then opens sideways into the open sea through a large underwater archway. Beyond the arch, the seabed drops dramatically, reaching over 50 meters in depth, providing a playground for experienced divers.

The structure was formed when the ceiling of a sea cave collapsed, leaving behind this perfectly-shaped sinkhole. Today, it’s a window into Gozo’s rich geological and marine heritage.

A Diver’s Paradise

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, the Blue Hole offers a dive experience like no other. The entrance is sheltered and relatively calm, making it ideal for descent. As you move deeper, you’ll pass through the majestic arch that leads into the open sea, revealing schools of fish, sea sponges, moray eels, and coral-covered rock walls.

The visibility is often exceptional — up to 40 meters on a good day — allowing you to fully appreciate the dramatic drop-offs and underwater architecture. Underwater photographers will be in heaven with the light filtering in from above and the rich blues surrounding the rock structures.

If you’re lucky, you might spot groupers, amberjacks, or even barracuda patrolling the depths.

A Scenic Spot for Non-Divers Too

You don’t have to be a diver to enjoy the Blue Hole. The location is equally impressive from the surface. The walk to the site takes you through Dwejra’s iconic landscape, with jagged limestone formations, salt pans, and panoramic views of the open sea.

Just nearby, you’ll find the remnants of the Azure Window, a massive rock arch that once stood as one of Malta’s most photographed landmarks before collapsing in 2017. Though the arch is gone, its legacy still draws visitors to Dwejra Bay, and the collapse has added new underwater formations for divers to explore.

Snorkelers can enjoy the shallow edges of the Blue Hole, where marine life thrives among the rocks and crevices. The site is also popular with swimmers and sunbathers who just want to soak in the raw beauty of Gozo’s coastline.

Best Time to Visit

The Blue Hole can be visited year-round, but the best time is between May and October, when the sea is calm and warm, and visibility is at its best. Early mornings or late afternoons offer softer light and fewer crowds, making it a more peaceful experience.

As always, it’s important to check weather and sea conditions, especially if you plan to dive. Local guides and diving centers are always happy to advise and help plan your visit safely.

How to Get There

The Blue Hole is located in Dwejra, on the west coast of Gozo. From the Gozo ferry terminal in Mgarr, it’s about a 25–30 minute drive. If you don’t have your own transport, many guided tours include Dwejra and the Blue Hole as part of their itinerary.

There is a small parking area near the site, along with a short walking path leading down to the rocky platform where divers and swimmers enter the water.

Respect the Environment

The Blue Hole is part of a protected marine area and deserves the utmost care from all visitors. If you’re snorkeling or diving, avoid touching or disturbing marine life. Don’t leave any waste behind, and stick to designated paths to help preserve the fragile coastal terrain.

This isn’t just about preserving a tourist site — it’s about protecting a natural ecosystem that has taken millennia to form.

What makes the Blue Hole so special isn’t just its shape or dive depth. It’s the entire setting — the rugged cliffs, the geological history, the biodiversity beneath the waves, and the sheer feeling of awe that hits you when you stand on the edge and peer into its depths.

It’s a place where nature shows off its artistry. Where land, sea, and sky collide in one breathtaking moment. Whether you’re underwater or above it, the Blue Hole is one of Gozo’s must-see locations.
